Exercise #3

Tinting Neutrals: Giving Life to Grays

Pure grayscale neutrals (#808080, #D4D4D4, pure zero-saturation gray) often feel clinical, sterile, and uninviting. Top digital products infuse subtle brand warmth into their neutrals by chroma-tinting:

  • Slate / Cool Neutrals (Blue-tinted): Infused with a hint of blue or cyan (e.g., Tailwind Slate, GitHub Primer). Conveys engineering precision, modern tech, and focus.
  • Zinc / Modern Neutrals (Subtle Violet/Indigo): Crisp, balanced, and contemporary (e.g., Linear, Raycast, Vercel).
  • Stone / Warm Neutrals (Warm Amber/Brown): Infused with yellow or warm stone (e.g., Notion, Substack, Medium). Conveys editorial intimacy, organic warmth, and literature.

Pro Tip: Keep neutral saturation low (2% to 6% chroma in OKLCH). High saturation makes grays look muddy and clashes with colorful content.
