Exercise #6

Choreography and Staggered Entrances in Data Feeds

When an application loads a grid of 12 cards simultaneously:

  • If all 12 cards animate in together, the screen explodes with overwhelming visual noise.
  • If all 12 pop in sequentially with a 200ms delay each, the last card takes 2.4 seconds to appear, frustrating the user.

Cascade Staggering Principles

  • Stagger Offset: Apply a micro-delay of 20ms to 40ms between successive elements.
  • Directional Wave: Elements should enter in the direction of reading (top-to-bottom, left-to-right).
  • Group Capping: Never stagger more than 6 to 8 items in a cascade; group remaining items into a single final fade.
