Exercise #3

Design System Governance Models

Without a formal governance model, design systems quickly fragment into unmaintained chaos:

1. Centralized Model

A dedicated team of designers and engineers owns the design system full-time:

  • Pros: Supreme consistency and high technical quality.
  • Cons: Can become an operational bottleneck for feature teams.

2. Federated Model

Designers from multiple product teams form a guild that co-maintains the system:

  • Pros: High product relevance and fast buy-in across squads.
  • Cons: Requires strict leadership to prevent conflicting patterns.

3. Hybrid (Hub-and-Spoke) Model

The gold standard. A central core team maintains foundational tokens and core primitives, while federated feature teams contribute domain-specific components through a formal review pipeline.
