Exercise #1

What is a Design System? Beyond Simple UI Kits

A common industry misconception confuses a Figma UI kit or a brand style guide with a design system:

  • Style Guide: Static document detailing brand colors, logos, and typographic voice.
  • UI Kit / Component Library: A collection of reusable visual components (in Figma or code).
  • Design System: A complete ecosystem of visual guidelines, design tokens, production code components, governance processes, documentation, and tooling that orchestrates digital product design across an entire enterprise.

A design system is not a project with an end date; it is an evolving internal product serving designers and engineers.
