Exercise #2

Macro-Whitespace vs. Micro-Whitespace as Active Forces

Whitespace (often termed negative space) is not empty canvas—it is the single most critical structural element in interface layout:

  • Macro-Whitespace: The generous spacing between major interface modules (e.g., margins between global headers, content grids, and sidebars). Macro-whitespace allows the human brain to decompress and categorize page regions effortlessly.
  • Micro-Whitespace: The precise micro-padding between typographic lines (leading), icon-to-label offsets, and card borders. Micro-whitespace directly controls legibility and perceived polish.

The Cognitive Claustrophobia Anti-Pattern

When design teams pack every available pixel with data, users experience cognitive claustrophobia. Generous whitespace increases reading comprehension by up to 20% and signals premium quality.
