Exercise #1

The Atomic Grammar of UI: Line, Shape, Form, and Mass

Every digital product—from minimalist mobile utilities to multi-window trading desks—is constructed from fundamental design elements:

  • Line: Directs the human gaze, delineates functional sections, and establishes boundaries. In modern UI, harsh 1px borders are frequently replaced with subtle tonal shifts to reduce visual noise.
  • Shape & Form: Rectangles form the structural foundation of the web (cards, viewports, input containers), while circles represent avatars and notification badges. Rounded corners (border-radius) soften interfaces, making elements feel approachable and physically tactile.
  • Volume & Mass: How elements occupy screen real estate. High visual mass commands immediate attention, signaling primary importance.
