Exercise #3

Depth of Field, Bokeh, and Guiding Attention

In visual composition, depth of field (DoF) is a powerful interaction design mechanism:

  • Shallow Depth of Field: Keeps the primary product in razor-sharp focus while gracefully blurring the background (bokeh).
  • Cognitive Function: Automatically directs the user's foveal gaze to the value proposition, eliminating competing visual distractions.
  • Application in Software Landing Pages: Hardware devices or software mockups are rendered with shallow depth of field so users focus on the interaction flow rather than surrounding desk clutter.
