Exercise #1

Exposure, Luminance, and Dynamic Range in UI Imagery

In digital interface composition, imagery must harmonize with surrounding UI tokens. Product photos that are severely overexposed or underexposed destroy visual rhythm:

  • Exposure: The total quantity of light captured. Overexposure blows out highlights to pure white (#FFFFFF), obliterating edge contrast against light backgrounds.
  • Dynamic Range: The ratio between the darkest shadows and brightest highlights. In UI cards, high dynamic range ensures subtle texture details remain visible in both dark and light modes.
  • Luminance Balance: Maintaining consistent average luminance across image galleries prevents visual jarring when users scroll through feeds.
