Exercise #2

The 12-Spoke Color Wheel & Spatial Relationships

Developed originally by Sir Isaac Newton and refined by Johannes Itten, the color wheel maps the chromatic spectrum into a circular continuum:

  1. Primary Hues: Red, Yellow, Blue (in pigment) or Red, Green, Blue (in additive light). These foundational hues cannot be formed by mixing others.
  2. Secondary Hues: Created by mixing two primaries in equal proportions (Orange, Green, Violet).
  3. Tertiary Hues: Created by combining a primary with an adjacent secondary (Red-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-Violet).

Understanding the geometric relationships between spokes on the wheel enables designers to engineer mathematical color harmonies rather than guessing.
