Exercise #2

Single-Column vs. Multi-Column Layout Architecture

Choosing the right column architecture directly controls user reading speed and cognitive load:

Single-Column Layouts

  • Characteristics: Content stacks linearly down a single central track (maximum width ~680px for reading comfort).
  • Ideal Use Cases: Mobile experiences, long-form narrative articles, focused checkout flows, and login screens.
  • UX Benefit: Eliminates visual competition; users have only one path forward.

Multi-Column Layouts

  • Characteristics: Splits content into 2, 3, or 4 parallel streams (e.g., sidebar + feed + widgets).
  • Ideal Use Cases: Productivity platforms, email clients, and analytical dashboards.
  • UX Risk: If not governed by strict hierarchy, multi-column layouts induce sensory overload.
