Exercise #4

Monospace, Display, and Script Typefaces

Beyond primary body fonts, three specialized categories serve dedicated UI functions:

Monospaced Typefaces

Every character occupies the exact same horizontal width (e.g., JetBrains Mono, Roboto Mono).

  • UX Roles: Code editors, tabular financial data, currency balances, and invoice numbers. Fixed width prevents horizontal shifting when numbers update in real time.

Display Typefaces

Exuberant, stylized, or high-personality typefaces designed exclusively for large display sizes (32px and above).

  • UX Rule: Never use display typefaces for body copy; their intricate forms collapse into illegible blobs at small sizes.

Script Typefaces

Mimicking fluid handwriting or calligraphy. In digital products, scripts should be restricted to brief decorative accents or certificates, as long-form script text violates accessibility standards.
