Exercise #4

Contrast as the Engine of Conversion and Wayfinding

Contrast is the primary tool for communicating visual hierarchy. In practice, contrast is applied across multiple simultaneous dimensions:

  • Luminance Contrast: Dark text on a bright background (or vice versa).
  • Scale Contrast: Pairing a 40px primary stat number with a 12px descriptive label.
  • Weight Contrast: Pairing a Bold 700 headline with a Regular 400 subtext.
  • Color Contrast: Isolating a bright emerald green button within a calm monochromatic slate dashboard.

If every button on a screen is styled as a primary high-contrast button, nothing stands out, and user conversion plummets.
